Recorded in Ireland by producer Declan Sinnott, this ten-track album of original material offers a pleasant journey through traditional blues. However, I rate it three out of five stars, as it settles into a landscape that is far too safe. The album highlights lie in the clean guitar work and the warmth of the vocals in acoustic tracks like “Busted” or “All Loved Up.” The closing title track brings a valuable dose of honesty and personal nostalgia. Unfortunately, the record lacks surprise or innovative drive that a musician with a five-decade career could risk displaying. Sinnott’s production is overly polished, which at times strips away the emotional grit, so important to this genre.
Although songs like “I Know You Through and Through” flirt with interesting funk grooves, most of the track list go on without surprises. It is by no means a bad record, but it feels more like a repetition of familiar formulas than an essential release. It accomplishes the standards of classic blues, but it will hardly captivate listeners outside most purist blues lovers.
In short, “Bridge Street Blues” is a technically flawless and nostalgic album, perfect for a relaxed listen, though unable to leave a lasting mark on today’s scene.
