If there is an animal which appears countless times in popular iconography, it is no other than the wolf. Not only in children’s stories like “Little Red Riding Hood”, “The Three Little Pigs” or “The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids” but also in folklore, rural stories, mythology, lycanthropy, the history of humanity and, of course, music. The wolf has always been next to human beings and, although it has mostly been a hated animal, there are also stories of companionship and friendship between a man and a wolf, like the legend of a wolf and Saint Francis of Assisi.
With the aim to present different and really original recordings, Bear Family Records has released an album where the thirty-two songs have the wolf as the main character.
Framed in styles like rockabilly, blues, country, doo-wop or western swing, the album gathers a bunch or valuable gems, some of them totally unknown by general audience, like “I’m The Wolf Man” by Round Robin, “Stop Whistlin’ Wolf” by The Maddox Brothers & Rose or “The Wolf Hop” by The Anderson Sisters, together with other more popular ones like “The Wolf Is At Your Door” by Howlin’ Wolf, “Wolf On The River” by Amos Milburn, “Wolf Call” by Elvis Presley, “Hillbilly Wolf” by Billy Strickland or “Lil’ Red Riding Hood” by Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs. The enclosed booklet also includes each song’s short story.
Although most of the compositions and performers will not be familiar listeners, the song’s quality is undeniable. Most of them are performed in a lighthearted funny way, although you will find a few more dramatic cuts. All the album songs will bring people closer to the first half of the twentieth century popular music displaying the wolf mythical figure in its different facets and legends.
