The last release “Bulldog” coming from Woodbury Trio, is one of those albums that perfectly defines what it means to “deliver without dazzling”. It is not a poor or bad one by any means, it looks like a blues-rock session recorded by an exceptionally competent band that simply decided not to take any risk. From the opening track, it becomes evident that Woodbury is a gifted guitarist with a pristine tone and enviable technique. However, the songwriting lacks that essential “hook” needed to keep in the listener’s mind once the reproducing needle drops. Production is perhaps too neat, stripping away the necessary grit that usually gives its soul to the blues. At times, the record sounds more like a high-fidelity equipment demo than an outpouring of musical passion. The grooves are solid, thanks to a rhythm section that never misses a beat, but that does not propose any compelling dialogue with the lead guitar. It is the perfect background music for a sophisticated nightclub, but hardly something you would reach for at home.

Lyrically, the album drifts through the genre’s standard clichés without offering a fresh perspective or a gripping narrative. “Bulldog” is an exercise in style: well-developed, professional and respectful to the roots, but lacking that spark of brilliance that distinguishes a craftsman from an essential artist. In the end, it leaves you with the feeling of having listened to it before, something perfectly appropriate, but ultimately forgettable.
