The Blues Kid Combo is a group of young musicians fronted by singer and guitar player Enzo Cappadona. “Gaston’s Guitar” is an album that Enzo dedicates to his grandfather, Gaston, -the man who gifted him his first guitar and introduced him to the world of music-. The recording stands out for its faultless craftsmanship. From the very first bars, listeners are greeted by a polished production and a crisp sound that does justice to every single instrument. The band proves to be a solid outfit, with musicians who master their respective tools and display every note with pinpoint precision. The guitar work by young Enzo Cappadona shines brightly, showcasing clean phrasing and well-structured solos that reflect hours of practice and a deep respect for the roots of the genre. The rhythm is steady, and the bass and drums rhythm section, driven by Laurent Basso and Léo Jimenes respectively, runs like a Swiss watch, providing the perfect basis for the melodies to unfold seamlessly.
Despite this good dose of technical virtues, the album shows a noticeable lack of soul. The virtuosity and excellent engineering fail to mask a cold, academic approach that spoils the final result. Blues, a genre born from the gut and the need to channel raw emotions, is turned here into an overly restrained stylistic exercise. Everything sounds exactly where it should be, but it lacks the needed spark, risk and grit to totally connect with listeners. By the end of listening to it, one has the feeling of having enjoyed a flawless but distant performance, with the result of a well-executed album that convinces listeners’ ears but, unfortunately, fails to move their hearts.
