Steve Tallis’ albums always surprise us, not only for the wide range of his repertoire but also for the eclecticism and personality that can be found in every recording. He confirms it again with the release of his last album, a triple CD that includes 25 songs in the first one he performs together with Gary Ridge, 18 in the second one and 23 in the third one, this last one recorded alone.
The three CDs want to become a tribute to most of the great names in the music world, who unfortunately are no longer with us, but who have left an indelible mark that should never be forgotten, which memories bring to Steve Tallis a good number of deep feelings he does not want to hide but to involve all those who come to listen to this triple cd with a curious open mind.
Tallis comes from Australia, although his family roots can be found in Macedonia, so Steve has absorbed many musical genres, from blues to rock, Africa or Balkan folklore. This is why his influences are so varied and include names like Leadbelly, John Coltrane, Dr. John, Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Van Morrison, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, Jack Bruce, JB Lenoir, Bob Dylan and, of course, African, Indian, Haitian or Islamic music.
On the first CD Steve is on vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass, while Gary Ridge is on drums and different kinds of percussions. The second features Steve on vocals and guitar, Phil Bradley on guitars, Hans-Aage Deberitz on bass, and Yugon “Chobby” Chobanoff on drums. Finally, in the third one you will find Steve Tallis on vocals and 6 and 12 strings guitars.
All songs development is complex, with the purpose to show human beings experiences, displayed from different backgrounds and musical perspectives by a non-conformist, universal, brave man, who is always willing to explore new ways and forms of musical expression, which always surprise listeners by the risks of his proposals. Let yourself be captivated by Steve Tallis’ innovative charisma. VERY GOOD.
