Clarence Edward Smith, aka Sonny Rhodes, was born the same day and month than I was, November, the 3rd, but not the same year, as he was born in 1940 and I was born fairly later on Singer and guitar player, especially devoted to ‘steel guitar’ technique, he remains one of these representative bluesmen of Texas and California old traditional blues with some Chicago influences too He began to play when he was only nine years old, deeply impressed by musicians like T-Bone Walker, Junior Parker (in fact he became his car-driver and butler), or Chick Willis (Chick was the person who influenced him on the habit of wearing turban) Since Tom Mazzolini, director of The San Francisco Blues Festival, discovered him at the beginning of the seventies, Sonny Rhodes has been doing endless tours all over the world This new cd is an impressive example of his usual blues style, that still becomes bigger, thanks to the amazing collaboration of first class harmonica players like RJ Mischo, Brian Templeton and ‘Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone Eleven amazing songs, six own ones and five covers, among them two terrific versions of Little Milton’s Anne Mae Café and Slim Harpo’s Shake Your Hips What a superb cd!
