“Lucky Dragonfly” is a vibrant collaboration between sax player Sam Burckhardt and piano player Jeremy Kahn. Released in early 2026 under Burckhardt’s own Airway Records label, the album sits right at the intersection of jazz and blues, capturing the musical chemistry that was born by chance during a Chicago benefit event, where both musicians shared stage for the first time.
The recording is perfectly balanced between intimate tenor sax and piano duets and full-band songs, featuring Jake Vinsel on double bass and Phil Gratteau on drums.
Along the thirteen songs, Burckhardt shows his melodic mastery in classics like “Jitterbug Waltz” and “Moonglow,” but he also presents original compositions like the title album track. Recorded at Chicago’s Transient Sound Studio, the recording stands out for its organic warmth, which perfectly highlights the robust tone of Sam’s tenor sax, who also steps up to the mic for a vocal performance in “Out Of Nowhere.” The album becomes a work of art that celebrates the fluid improvisation as well as the classic swing of Chicago scene.
A perfect work for those of you who are looking for sophisticated but, at the same time, reachable and deeply soulful jazz.
