Casually some weeks ago, Roser Blues and I saw The Royal Southern Brotherhood in Barcelona, brought by Thomas Ruf and booked by promoter Oriol Carbonell to do a few gigs in Spain As the album title says, The Royal Southern Brotherhood has stopped to look back, renewing the band and repertoire Two of its founding members, Devon Allman and Mike Zito have started their own musical careers alone, trying to get a place in the music market So this is then a new band where the leader Cyril Neville has decided to take a turn, performing a new repertoire he calls ‘gumbo rock’, a name I personally do not much agree with For doing this change, he has counted with the valuable guitar players Bart Walker and Tyrone Vaughan (Jimmy Vaughan’s son and Steve Ray’s nephew), together with Charlie Wootton on bass and Yonrico Scott on drums, plus the collaboration of Ivan Neville on Hammond B-3 and a restrained effective horn section with two sax and a trumpet With this renewal and this excellent album, The Royal Southern Brotherhood start a new era where they forget the past to offer a different and improved version of the music they have been playing since they appeared in the music world till now, but always inspired in rock, soul and blues
