Ronnie Baker Brooks has certainly inherited from his father Lonnie Brooks all his charisma, talent and feeling, besides growing, learning and almost daily playing with artists like Albert Collins, B.B. King, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor and his father as well.
Born in 1967 in Chicago, at the age of nine he already had his own guitar. After high school he joined his father’s band as a roadie, where he started to learn all the secrets of blues music. In 1993 he was recruited for B.B. King’s tour also featuring Koko Taylor, Junior Wells and his father too. One day B.B. said to him, “Son, I’m watching you watch me. You learn everything you can from all of us, especially your dad. He’s as good as me or better than me, we just have different styles”.
With all the things he has learned, Ronnie has gradually built up his own style, following the advice of those legendary names who always told him the importance of “delivering” the songs he played and firmly believe in what he was performing, something he has reached with hard work, determination and perseverance, following the legacy of his family and his mentors, something that has made him become now one of the greatest representatives of the actual Chicago blues.
Although this is the fifth album he has released, it is the first one he has recorded for Alligator Records. It is deeply rooted in blues, adding some touches of soul, funk or rock to the twelve songs included, most of them own compositions where, according to Ronnie, he plays what he feels and what comes from the depths of his soul, presenting from the most classic old school blues to Memphis soul or some occasional ballads, all seasoned with electrifying guitar solos and lyrics that tell us about racism, poverty or love, because love is in his blood and blues is in his DNA.
Ronnie Baker Brooks is on vocals and guitar, Will McFarlane plays rhythm guitar, Dave Smith is on bass and Steve Potts on drums, together with a well selected handful of guests and, as a curiosity and a tribute, his father’s voice can be heard for 13 seconds in the second track.
