The comeback of the Rogue Johnsen Project’s with the latest studio album, “NEXT!”, solidifies the flawless technical delivery and performance charisma that the band usually communicates along American roots music circuit. However, this release produces a notable division when it is strictly evaluated under the blues criteria I usually work with. Listeners approaching this recording and expecting a traditional, orthodox 12-bar blues repertoire, will find a rather hybrid proposal, that fades away its traditional essence in favor of a complete fusion. The album boldly moves along polished soul landscapes, with a good number of jazz flashes and flirting with some melodic passages that reduce the space for the traditional rawness of the genre. Although the instrumental arrangements are faultless and the production beautifully captures a really vibrant atmosphere, the dramatic tension and the emotional moan are totally diffused.

The final balance moves towards a sophisticated, easy-listening sound, but that lacks the deep-seated roots demanded by the genre’s purists. Consequently, “NEXT!” remarkably succeeds as a showcase of contemporary musical versatility. Nevertheless, it falls short of becoming an essential collector’s piece for traditional roots enthusiasts.

It looks like an engaging recording to enjoy with, that deserves a good rating due to its undeniable high-quality musical delivery, despite going off the genre.
