It is extremely surprising to find a musician from Nepal who plays real blues with a good knowledge. This is the case of Prakash Slim, a totally passionate blues musician who, from a so distant place as Nepal, discovered the blues and, from that moment on, started to study and practice hours and hours listening to musicians like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell, Mississippi John Hurt or Blind Blake among many others, managing to create a personal style that, from time to time, oozes influences of sitar sound, the ragas or his country traditional music.
The album represents the impressive journey Prakash recently took from Nepal to the Mississippi and, from there, head to other well-known blues places like the West Coast, to fully immerse himself with a deep respect and veneration in the music and culture which have always been his greatest influences.
When Michael Freeman, owner of Blue Point Records, heard that Prakash was in Clarksdale to play at the Juke Joint Festival, he got in touch with him and offered to record an album at Sam Phillips Recording Studios.
The result is this cd with eight own compositions, seven of them co-written with Henry D. Jones, plus four versions like “Kokomo Blues” and “Write Me A Few Lines” coming from Mississippi Fred McDowell, “Things Bout Coming My Way” by Walter Vinson and “Hammer Blues” by Charley Patton, that round up an album where Prakash is on vocals and resonator guitar, Johnny Burgin is on electric guitar and Michael Freeman himself on drums.
A recording that reflects the story of that initiatory journey, showing the importance and value that blues have for Prakash, as well as becoming a good example of how a musician from Nepal is able to perform the most traditional blues with honesty, reverence and an undeniable passion.
