After listening hundreds of times to a cassette of “Muddy Mississippi Waters Live” and watching Jimi Hendrix by chance on television, Max Hightower’s life totally changed. He didn’t have the money to buy a guitar, so his grandmother dusted off an old Silvertone guitar from the 50’s she had in the box room and gave it to him. However, the strings were totally rusted, and he couldn’t play it, so it was really frustrated. One day his grandmother came with a harmonica. Thanks to this instrument, Max introduced himself to the blues world. He soon became a multi-instrumentalist and producer, sharing stage with musicians like Hubert Sumlin, Willie Smith, Bob Margolin, Bob Stroger, Eddie Shaw, Kim Wilson and Bobby Rush among others.
Although he was a member of various groups like Mac Arnold or Plate Full O’Blues, Max wanted to find his own sound and he had the idea of combining raw blues with groove. Looking for new opportunities he traveled to New Orleans, where he decided to record a series of his own songs that reflected the sound of a live band, all of them without click tracks or alternative takes, with the risk that some small mistakes of a live show could appear on the album but at the same time, communicating the genuine and real sound of a live performance.
The result is an album with twelve songs where Max is on vocals, guitar and harmonica together with a group of musicians who have understood the message that Max wants to give to the audience, combined in a very daring way the blues with groove and greasy southern funk, with no room for ballads or sad songs, but only the rhythm and feeling of a performer who, after hundreds of live shows, jams and thousands of kilometers, brings us his most honest and personal version of the music that changed his life when he was only twelve years old.
