This album will surely appeal fans of garage and hard-core blues and even grunge blues Singer and guitar player Markus James (who in this cd plays such varied instruments like gould banjo, a three-string cigarbox guitar, a dulcimer with a slide, a one-string Diddley bow, a beatbox and harmonica), performs a powerful hypnotic raw blues with African roots on a powerful effective way, backed by drummers Kinney Kimbrough, Calvin Jackson, Aubrey ‘Bill’ Turner, R L Boyce and Marlon Green along the sixteen songs included in Head For The Hills Markus James has always shown a deep interest to know the connection between Mississippi blues (specially the one coming from northern hills) and the African music of Timbuktu area Markus travelled to Africa and he was impressed by the rhythms played by three drummers and a special instrument called a cane flute Back in the USA he realized how close were what he had heard in Africa and the particular style called ‘North Mississippi Hill Country Music’ This album brings an excellent mixture of African music with traditional blues of northern Mississippi, all performed from the heart and with great feeling
