It’s always a pleasure to get records coming from such a distant country as Australia, a country where the blues is in good health. This is the case of this album by multi-instrumentalist Mark Easton who plays guitar, bass, drums and darbuka, joined by Morin Khuur on dombra, jaw harp and vocals, with the special collaboration of Marji Curran on vocals in the song “Baby Please Don’t Go”.
For this album Mark has found inspiration in well-known blues artists like Canned Heat, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Big Joe Williams or John Lee Hooker, but also by musicians like Batzorig, The Hu, Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Bukhu, Shono or Jamala among others. From the bluesmen ones, he has selected some of his best-known songs, giving them a new air, thanks to the special way they are sung, with a throat raw voice, and the curious arrangements and instrumentation that, despite the songs are recognizable, they sound totally different from the originals and get an own life.
Mark is known in Australia for his originality, as he knows how to combine styles like blues, rock, Mongolian music or Middle Eastern folk, but he also dares with punk and glam rock. He has traveled to Asia and those trips have given him a wide knowledge of the folk music and traditional instruments of those countries. Originality and spirituality go together along the whole recording, where Mark mixes with enthusiasm and good taste East and West music, also using some instruments not known both Europe and USA.
The album has been recorded and mixed at Plastic Donut Studios by Mark Easton himself.
