Maria Muldaur is a versatile singer with an extensive career of just over sixty years in American roots music and blues fields. She has recorded forty-three albums of traditional music, more than twelve of them totally devoted to blues, where some great well-known musicians have also collaborated. She is still active, and despite her age, her voice still keeps the feeling and energy that make her be an elegant singer endowed with a special taste and a unique voice highly appreciated by good fans.

According to her own words, when she started to do her first steps as a blues singer in the early 60’s, Victoria Spivey, one of the 20’s and 30’s classic blues queens as well as a free woman who always took the reins of her life, became her mentor, helping and advising Maria in her career. Although at that time she was very grateful, it is now as the years have passed by, when she has realized the importance of all the support she received from Victoria Spivey, who introduced her to the music market, made her be known to other musicians and she even recorded for Spivey Records, the recording company created and directed by Victoria Spivey.

Now Maria Muldaur wants to pay tribute to that great artist, with an album that includes twelve unforgettable songs that were once performed by Victoria, that Maria faithfully reproduces with an extreme good taste and an impressive feeling, that brings us closer to those vaudeville blues songs that were so important for the women’s liberation and empowerment, represented by Spivey and other singers like her, which made an essential contribution to the blues, as well as gave to it a brightness and sophistication that had never had until then.

Maria Muldaur does a fantastic job on vocals, together with an excellent group of musicians and the special collaborations of Tuba Skinny and his New Orleans band. She also performs two duets, one with Elvin Bishop and the other one with Taj Majal.

This album becomes a valuable treasure for most classic blues and general good music lovers as well.
