Mad Dog Friedman, also known as Mad Dog Blues, is a harmonica player, singer, and songwriter who also plays the Native American flute. He defines his own style as “eclectic blues and soul jam”, he performs as a solo artist or in duo, trio or string band formats.
Hailing from Colorado, Mad Dog reveals himself as a virtuoso down-home harmonica player. The grit of Delta blues, the rhythm of bluegrass, the swagger of honky-tonk, the swing of hokum and the acoustic improvisations, all blend into an original sound deeply rooted in the styles pioneered in the 20’s by musicians like Jed Davenport or Noah Lewis. Songs that captivate for their honesty, sounding as if they were played during an after-work porch jam session in the Colorado countryside, performed with an extreme passion by Mad Dog Blues.
The album was recorded during the Colorado Blues Challenge and captures the raw genuineness of a voice and a harmonica, through a handful of heartfelt songs, developed in the tradition of the just mentioned Jed Davenport and Noah Lewis, but also with influences of Peg Leg Sam, Jaybird Coleman, Deford Bailey and Sonny Terry’s early recordings.
These ten live-recorded tracks prove that, with nothing more than a harmonica and a voice, one artist can create enough feeling to catch the audience and communicate the passion, intensity and love for true blues. Mad Dog Blues invites us to a journey through the roots of a kind of music that remains timeless.
