A superb album with the best of blues, swing, jump, jive and rhythm and blues in the career of a great trumpet player and singer called Thadeus Oran Hot Lips Page, who could have even casted a shadow to Louis Armstrong himself, but unfortunately this was not the case, in part due to the poor or non-existent work of his manager, a man who was unable to take on the career of this great artist as he really deserved Besides a great session musician, as we must not forget that during his music career he recorded with a long list of musicians and singers such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Billie Holliday, Pete Johnson, Artie Shaw (he recorded with Artie one of the most beautiful versions of the song St James Infirmary), Big Maybelle, Earl Bostic, Big Joe Turner, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson or Wynonie Harris among others, Page was also a splendid hot trumpet player and he was member of Count Basie Orchestra, drummer Lux Alexander Orchestra and Bennie Motten Orchestra among others Hot Lips also formed his own combos, recording for a countless number of record labels like King, Columbia, Apollo, Continental, Bluebird, Decca, Savoy, RCA For this essential compilation published by El Toro Records, they have selected twenty songs recorded during the late forties and early fifties, including a good number of previously unissued material and even some curiosities like his duo singing Little Sylvia or Mildred Anderson This is a delightful album to enjoy and calmly savour for years and years The only objection is the background crackling noise that can be heard in practically all songs
