Shemekia Copeland treasures one of the most powerful and passionate voices of the actual blues scene, which has made her to become one of the leading blues artists of the XXI Century. Daughter of guitar player and singer Johnny Copeland, Shemekia received and learned from her father all the blues essence and spirit, but she has also impregnated her music with her own rules and personality, changing blues into something very personal, where she shows her multiple facets and the different ways she faces life.
Although she defines herself as apolitical, both in this album and her two previous ones, Shemekia’s aim is to communicate listeners what is currently happening in her country, sometimes with an ironical humorous approach and other times in an angry visceral way.
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and produced by multi-instrumentalist and composer Will Kimbrough, the album gathers twelve powerful songs where Copeland is backed by a wide varied group of musicians who provide the best support to make her voice shine and get stratospheric levels, driving blues to a new dimension, but also pointing situations like racism, hate or xenophobia, developed with a passionate feeling that will go deep into listener’s bones who undoubtedly will be caught by the magnificent robust voice she has been blessed with.
