What can be expected from a band which for thirty-seven years has reproduced and carried on Memphis rich musical tradition, mixing styles like rock, soul, blues, funk, jazz, gospel or reggae, without forgetting New Orleans, San Francisco or Jamaica rhythms? The band’s name is FreeWorld and, with this new recording, they fully confirm the quality and experience of a group which, for so many years, has delighted different audiences.
The band was founded in 1987, after young bass player Richard Cushing met legendary sax player Dr. Herman Green and decided to start a new project. Since then on, success has come along with them and, although Green passed away in 2020, Cushing has gone on, leading the band and playing bass, singing and writing songs.
This is their eighth album that includes twelve songs, most of them their own compositions, that become a tribute to Herman Green. In each song you will immediately discover their undeniable creativity and originality, with influences that come from such varied names like Booker T. & The M.G.’s, Steely Dan, Chicago, The Meters, Grateful Dead, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa or Bob Marley, all seasoned with Memphis groove and soul, which makes as a result a recording fulfilled with a wide variety of colors, nuances and rhythms, to be enjoyed again and again.
Four of the founding musicians still play in the band which now includes Richard Cushing on vocals and bass, Walter Hughes on guitars, Cedric Taylor on keyboards, piano and Hammond B3, Peter Climie on tenor, baritone and alto sax, Alex Schuetrumpf on trumpet, Frank Paladino on baritone sax, Freedman Steorts on trombone, Matt Sweatt on drums, Courtney Reid on backing vocals, plus a big bunch of guest musicians and also featuring the Tennessee Mass Choir. Together they round up and give substance to a really interesting album that surely will not disappoint most listeners.
