Musically speaking Mexican singer, sax player and composer Evelyn Rubio grew up next to famous trumpet player and orchestra conductor Calvin Owens who, for many years, led BB King’s Orchestra With Owens and his big band, Evelyn was introduced as a singer in the United States, which allowed her to take up the textures and colours of Texas and in general all West Coast blues After his master and mentor passed away, Evelyn Rubio followed her career as singer in big bands, basically performing in casinos, restaurants, cruises and luxury halls Hombres was recorded shortly before Calvin Owens’ death and includes eleven songs with the special particularity the same album has been recorded in two different versions, one completely sung in English and the other one totally in Spanish with the purpose of to open her way to Spanish speaking audiences Those who still remember an Argentine blues singer called Celeste Carvallo will find many things in common between these two artists This is an album full of glamour with some dazzling musical arrangements that enhance the work of a singer and sax player with an amazing seduction power
