The history of bottleneck technique in blues music, especially in Chicago post war blues, has a capital name, and the name is Elmore James. There is a before and an after in the history of this technique with Elmore James, which along the years has got a large list of followers. Only to say a few examples of artists who have been deeply influenced by Elmore, I could mention Homesick James, J.B. Hutto or Hound Dog Taylor among black musicians or Johnny Winter, George Thorogood or Roy Rogers among the white ones. The cd gathers real treasures of the period between 1951 and 1952 he recorded for Trumpet, Modern Flair and Chess. Some of the musicians who backed him were the ‘cream’ of Chicago blues, such as Little Johnny Jones on piano, Odie Payne Jr. on bass or J.T. Brow on sax. Excellent compilation that comes to satisfy our blues wishes.
