Harmonica player and singer Charlie Musselwhite is a living blues legend who mastery performs Chicago blues, but also West Side California blues, Mississippi Delta blues and Memphis soul blues. Like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf or Jimmy Reed, Charlie already belongs in his own right to the history of blues.
Born in Mississippi, he moved to Chicago in the early 60’s where he lived the golden years of the blues revival among the young generations of white music lovers and musicians. He soon became a harmonica player gifted with an own recognizable sound, besides getting a fine technique that let him be awarded with a Grammy, as well as nominated fifteen times for the same awards and thirty-three times winner of the Blues Music Awards.
With the experience, knowledge and good work he has gathered during his long years of career, this new album confirms that Charlie Musselwhite is still in a remarkable good shape, delivering an excellent performance, as well as singing with conviction. His harmonica playing is impressive too, he develops with good taste and accurate precision.
Eleven fantastic traditional blues songs, seasoned with that special touch and feeling Musselwhite always gives to his performance, make this recording a real gift for the ears of fans who look for the most genuine but, at the same time, contemporary blues.
The album was recorded at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland studios, who also is on guitar, piano and organ and has collaborated with Charlie different times as well. The rest of the musicians are the usual ones on Charlie’s tours and include Matt Stubbs on guitar, Randy Bermudes on bass and June Core on drums, with the special appearance of Al Kapone on vocals in “Ghosts in Memphis” and Edna Luckett also on vocals in “Ready For Times To Get Better”.
It is a real gem, you should not miss!
