The album “A-Live & Smokin’” perfectly captures the raw, magnetic essence of Bag Of Nails, the Greek trio that has revitalized the European psych-blues and soul-rock scene. This record serves as a sound statement of the electrifying energy the band displays on stage, getting away from studio gimmicks to embrace a direct, fiery and deeply honest sound, even if it feels a bit too modern for my personal taste.

From the very first chords, the recording immerses listeners in an atmosphere drenched in smoke, sweat and analog distortion, following the mystique of legendary 60’s and ’70s clubs. Panos Katsikogiannis’s guitar leads the musical journey with sharp riffs and solos charged with visceral expressiveness, while the rhythm section weaves a hypnotic, rock-solid basis that lead most listeners into a trance experience.

One of the album’s major highlights is the opening track, a massive rendition of “Spoonful”, where the group shows their amazing skills for improvisation as well as their faithful approach to the roots of classic blues. The fluid transitions between melancholic calm and psychedelic outbursts reflect the maturity of a band at the top of their game. “A-Live & Smokin’” is not just a collection of live tracks, but an incredible sound experience that pays a wild tribute to pure rock freedom.
