Dr Ross was born in Tunica, Mississippi in 1925 As so many other bluesmen, he was a train and road hobo, an itinerant musician who, besides singing, also played guitar, harmonica and drums After travelling all around the south, especially along Mississippi Delta area, he joined the Army where he was known as ‘Doctor’ In 1952 he started to record for Chess, Sun and Testament labels This led him to participate in festivals and tours like the American Folk Blues Festival visiting Barcelona in October 29 1965 or Montreux Jazz Festival, which made him get popularity among European audiences On the other hand, Archie Edwards was a Piedmont singer and guitar player born in 1918 He played with other first class great bluesmen like Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and John Jackson He also owned a barbershop where he helped many young musicians to promote themselves In 1982 he also was chosen to participate at the annual American Folk Blues Festival tour in Europe Wolf Records now publishes an album with the recordings coming from a tour these two musicians did together in Greece in 1988 The recording historical value is immense because it allows us to know and enjoy a selection of fourteen songs coming from these two blues great names, which also have an excellent sound and final production Finally mention this cd is dedicated to the memory of my old friend Richard Chalk, I used to call ‘El Gringo Loco’, owner of Top Cat Records, who originally produced them, and who unfortunately passed away in September 2019
