Besides a virtuoso musician with more than a dozen albums releases, who knows very well fingerpicking guitar technique, Andy Cohen is a blues, folk and roots music walking encyclopedia He also devotes his time to teach the most traditional country blues to young generations Andy also organizes workshops and small festivals where his students can perform too He has shared stage and worked with artists like John Jackson, Reverend Gary Davis, Brother Daniel Womack, Honeyboy Edwards, Big Joe Duskin, Etta Baker and James ‘Son’ Thomas Now he brings us two new albums, the first one entitled Tryin’ To Get Home where he has included seventeen rural songs, many of them coming from pre-war period, combining his own compositions with others by Mississippi John Hurt, Charlie Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Fields Ward or Dave Van Ronk among others, but all them with a very special meaning for him Besides acoustic guitar, twelve-string guitar, National steel and piano on a couple of tracks, Cohen also sings in all cuts Her daughter Moira Meltzer-Cohen had the idea and collaborates in the second album Small But Mighty which collects some of the songs Andy Cohen uses to illustrates his classes for young students The pleasant didactic way of developing these sessions have make as a result that a good number of his students have become professional musicians who follow his task to keep alive the flame of pre-war blues In short words, two recordings I’m sure most blues followers will appreciate their value
