Mike Dangeroux “Still Dangeroux”

Mike Dangeroux "Still Dangerous"

“Still Dangerous” by Mike Dangeroux is a correct but predictable record that, personally speaking, fails to move me. Released by RD Records and featuring thirteen original tracks, this album coming from this Chicago guitar player constantly moves among blues, rock, and soul. While Dangeroux’s technical skills are undeniable, which justifies his good status in the American music scene, the songs development suffer from becoming excessively flat.

The album starts trying to capture the genre’s essence in tracks like “It Feels So Right” and “Nothing’s Gonna Keep Me Away”. However, the song structures become repetitive as the recording goes on. Songs like “Where’s My Money” get closer to the most hackneyed blues clichés without giving a breath of fresh air. RD Records’ production is clean and technically well developed, but it lacks the soul that usually defines the blues. One misses a greater sense of dynamism and melodic surprises to break up the instrumental monotony.

“Still Dangerous” remains halfway to truly shine with an own light and stays as a standard run-of-the-mill release for conventional blues enthusiasts. For the casual listener, the experience could become somewhat tedious due to the lack of tracks with sparks enough to surprise and hook them. It is a technically flawless but emotionally flat album, perfect as background music, but uninspiring for anyone looking for vibrant and truly innovative musical work.
