In 1984 singer and guitar player Chris Daniels decided to form a band that would reproduce the sound of orchestras that included a powerful horn section. That’s the way Chris Daniels & The Kings was born, with a lineup that now includes Chris Daniels on vocals and guitar, Colin “Bones” Jones on guitar, Bob Rebholz on sax, Darryl “Doody” Abrahamson on trumpet, John Thornburg on bass and Steve Ivey on drums. In 2010 singer Freddy Gowdy joined the band, although for this album they have counted with the collaboration of Darren Kramer on trombone, Sam Bush on mandolin and violin, Hazel Miller on vocals, Tom Capek on Hammond B3 and keyboards, Steve Conn on accordion and B3, Sonny Landreth on guitar, Christian Teele on percussion and the voices of Mark Oblinger, Linda Lawson, Robert Johnson and Kenny Andrus.
They are not a typical guitar band because its aim is to show how a singer and a horn section can establish a relationship like a “call and response”, in order different audiences are able to discover a rather forgotten sound that was so much in fashion during the forties of last century. In fact, the band started performing the music of artists like Louis Jordan or Luis Armstrong, although today they have moved to more actual styles like neo soul, funk or dance music.
The recording presents ten songs where listeners will find styles like jump blues, soul, rock, some ballads, shuffles and even disco music, all passed through the filter of incredible horn arrangements that, together with the vocal parts, have a prominent role along the whole cd.
The band has already released twenty albums and now celebrate a forty-year career that has led them to perform practically all over the world. The cd includes an extensive booklet with the band history, from its beginnings 40 years ago to the present day.
In short words, a recording that, although it is not mainly blues, becomes perfect to enjoy, dancing and soak up the musical richness that the horn section and the whole band as well provide to each and every one of the selected songs. GREAT.
