Fortunately, we have on hands an album by a new value of blues and soul. Only aged twenty-five, singer, keyboard player and composer Sonny Gullage has just released his debut album, which serves to certify the quality of an artist who, since he was a child, knew he wanted to devote himself to music. Not surprisingly, he came from a musical family, where his grandmother Sister Alberta Gullage played gospel, and his father Rony Gullage was bass player for Henry Butler or Dr. John among others. It was also said his family was in some way related to Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter as their family surname was originally Ledbetter.
Sonny began his career singing gospel and playing various instruments, until he decided to focus on keyboards. It wasn’t until he worked as a resident musician at B.B. King’s Blues Club in New Orleans, that he discovered his natural talent for singing blues, although gospel still has an important place in his music and life. According to his own words, “gospel and blues come from the same place. Gospel is the music of man trying to understand a Higher Power, and the blues is a man’s struggle to understand humanity”.
The recording has been produced by Tom Hambridge and gathers twelve songs with extensive influences of blues, gospel and soul, where Sonny shows a wide vocal range as well as his good work as piano player. All compositions have been written by Sonny Gullage in collaboration with Tom Hambridge and Richard Fleming. Sonny Gullage is on vocals and piano, Kenny Greenberg on guitar, Kevin McKendree on keyboards and piano, bass players are Tommy MacDonald and Rob Cureton and finally Tom Hambridge is on drums. You will also find the special collaboration of Christone “Kingfish” Ingram in the song “Worried About The Young” and Max Abrams on sax and Julio Díaz on trumpet in two songs.
