Born in Lafayette in the heart of Louisiana and son of the legendary Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural Sr., who was a zydeco music ambassador as well as a Grammy winner, Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. follows his father’s footsteps. Since his childhood he lived surrounded by Creole culture and music. At 17 he started playing in his father’s band. After he passed away, he decided to lead his own group, something he has done with the same energy and passion as his father, besides adding to zydeco music some touches of blues, roots music and rock. Today he is a renowned musician who has performed more than 2.500 shows worldwide, shared stage with Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples or Los Lobos, besides winning a Grammy in 2024, two Beat Music Awards for best zydeco artist and album and he has also been inducted to the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.
Eleven songs, nine of them own compositions plus two fantastic covers of “Fannie Mae” coming from Buster Brown and “I’m In The Wonder” by Clifton Chenier, round up an album that serves to give continuity to zydeco music and history, as well as making such distinctive Louisiana music style well-known and appreciated all over the world.
Although the instrument that stands out is the accordion, Buckwheat Zydeco also sings and plays Hammond B3. The rest of his band’s musicians are Joseph Chavis on guitar, Curtis Watson on trumpet, Lance Ellis and Robert Richard on sax, Lee Zeno on bass and vocals, Kevin Menard on drums and his son Kyle S. Dural, who continues the family saga, on rubboard.
An excellent album that not only preserves and makes zydeco popular but also provides large doses of quality, joy and genuineness.
